The Surprising Stress In the Day of a SAHM

January 28, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

Who knew that boredom and exhaustion put together would be stressful? Who knew that spending all day with someone whom you love dearly would be stressful? Well, today we went to the zoo. This may sound fun and charming, but it only takes up a couple hours, and when the zoo map is ingrained on your brain becomes tedious. Then we have to make sure we get fed, and fed good food, not crappy stuff that is going to get my little precious all hyped up and irritable. Then, when I am exhausted from carrying a tired child around, and dealing with tantrums I look at my watch and see that it is only 1pm. I drive around trying to get her to sleep, but she refuses despite needing to rub her eyes to stay awake. I just need a couple minutes to think and clear my head, but that doesn’t happen until 7pm when I need to clean the kitchen.

Tex-Mex-Burrito-Tacos With Rice

About once a month or so, we make Tex-Mex-Burrito-Tacos for dinner. This involves piling just about every food item that could be vaguely considered Mexican onto the dinner table, along with some tortillas, and letting each diner assemble his or her own gastronomical creation. Last night the offerings included pre-cooked carnitas, chile verde, shredded cheddar cheese, refried beans, chopped tomatoes, chopped red onions, and I can’t think of anything else. I sometimes include guacamole, but we didn’t include it last night. We started this practice because we have a thirteen-year-old very picky eater, who likes to assemble his food to his own specifications, thank you very much. Problem solved! A logical fruit smoothie for this kind of free-for-all would probably be either a peach/banana or mango/banana smoothie. Pineapple would be great if you want to go really crazy…

Taking Care of a Senior Dog

January 22, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

A senior dog (usually one over 7 years old) requires some adjustments for its care.  A senior dog needs foods which are specially formulated for an older dog; such foods may contain glucosamine for arthritis and joint pain and may be slightly higher in calories to help the older dog maintain a comfortable weight.  A senior dog still needs play and exercise time, although it’s likely that the play will be less vigorous than it used to be.  A daily walk is perhaps the best exercise for a senior dog since its low-impact and helps protect weak and deteriorating joints.  Finally, a senior dog needs something more than a cold hard floor or even a rug to sleep on.  There are a number of orthopedic dog beds available.  These beds are usually about 6 inches thick with egg-crate foam to cushion old joints.  Feed your senior dog well, give him some daily activity, and give him a comfy place to sleep; all of these will keep your dog happier for the rest of its life.

Bowling the Stress away

In my spare time, my number one favorite activity is bowling. It is a very fun way to release tension and get exercise all in one. I also enjoy going to park on days when it is nice to grill out and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. While at the park, I may go boating or feed the ducks or just lay out on my lounger while listening to music. That is another stress reducer as well. I enjoy movies either at the theater or at home, so I may get a rental, pop a big bowl of popcorn and watch a movie at home.
